We recently had Dean Sadamune and Jim Sink from Avatar-Reality on Bytemarks Cafe. Unfortunately the radio show does not lend itself well to images. The images, as you can see amplify the story about Blue Mars, the virtual reality platform being build by Avatar-Reality. I got a chance to spend some time in the AR offices getting the nickel tour from Dean. He showed me landscapes, underwater worlds, waterfalls, beautiful model avatars and game environments. it was quite impressive. My initial thought was to compare Blue Mars with Second Life but as soon as you see the detail in the rendered worlds the differences became obvious. The environments were rich, complex and easily captivating. This next generation virtual world runs on the CryEngine 2 game engine created by Crytek from Frankfurt, Germany. It’s also the same game engine that runs Far Cry on the XBox.

Based on what the guys were telling me, this is a platform for others to create on. Avatar-Reality will create some worlds but they are looking for others to create their own alternative realities. Another big difference from Second Life is rather then develop your 3D world with SL tools, Blue Mars is an environment that allows your to bring in models developed with your own favorite 3D modeling tools, like 3D Studio Max, Maya and Softimage. Besides the obvious entertainment value, there are countless applications in education, healthcare and commercial spaces. It struck me that if successful, Blue Mars could help boost the computer modeling and animation industry in Hawaii. Granted you could be anywhere to develop 3D models, but the Hawaii community would be right next door to the folks at AR. Question is will Blue Mars attract a sizable audience. The Second Life community has plateaued, but one could argue that is because the environment in SL hasn’t changed. Will they shift over to Blue Mars? I’m excited because Blue Mars will have linkages into my favorite social media tools. I’m disappointed though because Blue Mars will only run on Windows machines and not the Mac with the planned release this summer. The guys tell me Macs will be supported by the end of the year. On the other hand they also tell me that Blue Mars can be experienced on a $500 Windows machine. I’ve got some ideas. I just need to convince my friends in education and healthcare to start building their Blue Mars worlds so I can explore on my work machine!

Although I was thankful for getting let go from Hawaiian Tel in January 2008, it still pains me to see what has happen to this company. Today it was announced in both the Advertiser and Star Bulletin that Hawaiian Tel files for bankruptcy protection. I’ve been a telcom jock since returning to Hawaii in the 80s. To see this company go from the primary telecom provider to a mere after thought is humbling. I originally left Hawaiian Tel back in 1995 when it was <del datetime="2008-12-02T07:50:52+00:00">Verizon</del> GTE only to return in 2005 to find out how the Carlyle Group was going to take this local company public. Unfortunately it became quickly obvious the Carlyle execs did not know how to run a local telco. The back office system needed to be built from scratch and they put all their bets on Bearing Point to build that back office. Suffice it to say, that did not work and Acenture was brought in to do damage control. All the while customers were suffering and the company wasn’t rolling out any new services to ward off the land line erosion.

In 2005 HT was talking quad play: voice, video, Internet and wireless. By the end of 2007 it was a dual play with only voice and Internet, both very low margin businesses. The writing was on the wall. You might think HT faced the perfect storm: competition from national wireless companies and the cable company, no new service offerings, low margin Internet access, but no one predicted the financial market meltdown.

Hopefully Hawaiian Telcom will emerge like Hawaiian Airlines did, a stronger company but to do that there needs to be some radical changes. Worst case scenario, the State of Hawaii takes over and HT becomes a ward of the PUC. For what it is worth, I still have my landline because cell phone voice quality sucks, although that is made up for with mobility. I have both a DSL and cable modem for Internet because I can never do without my Internet connection.

I’ve been a longtime fan of Google and find myself using them more and more in my personal and small business computing. My Firefox home page is set to iGoogle, I am always on Gmail and get my Tweets get sent directly to Google Talk. I use Google Reader, Google Docs, Google Analytics and the list goes on. If and when Google Health was available I would definitely use that. Google is everywhere and as this article points out sits “on the biggest pile of information that has ever been collected in the world.” Enough so that Gartner has classified Google as a disruptive technology. It’s not hard to imagine IT services being outsourced to Google, if not in whole, certainly in parts. It is clear that any IT shop unable to quantify and communicate its value will get outsourced. Hold onto your seats as another paradigm shift is about to occur.

That is probably the most frequently asked question I get these days. Simply put I am a technical liaison between the HMSA business units and the IS dept. Cool huh. Well, the devil is in the details and believe me there are a lot of details but for the most part that is what I do. Technology, whether it’s the Internet, telecom, enterprise IT systems or networking has a level of complexity that tends to grow over time. People don’t want to deal with these complexities so guys like me are needed to explain it in bullet points, break it down and keep it moving. I was trying to explain how IT was needed to handle all this claim processing to my dad and his comment was, “Don’t they have a clerk to do that?” Maybe I failed in my attempt to explain but nevertheless, the fun part about it is staying on the bleeding edge with some of the new technologies and initiatives. We’ll be rolling out a new hand held wireless device for employees which means new gadgets and there are social media initiatives in the brew. I’m also working on a z/OS mainframe upgrade which I am sure only a rare few of you even care about.

Now the second most frequent question I get is: Did HMSA raise the rates just to hire you? Ha, yea, right! The right answer is here. I’ll leave this it to the regulators and accountants. I’ll stick to technology, it’s simpler.

This is the home of my new job and where I will be spending the better part of the day. Our first day was spent in new employee orientation but I get the feeling that orientation is going to take a lot longer than one day. Where telecom has its share of acronyms, HMSA and the medical insurance coverage business has its own unique set of alphabet soup. It’ll be like learning a new language all over again. I am in the IS (Information Systems) department so at least there is some familiarity there. The people are nice and everyone there seems to quite happy with their jobs. Tomorrow’s another day of orientation but more importantly I’ll get my laptop. I feel so out of it when I am not connected.

It’s been about 2 months since getting let go from Hawaiian Telcom and having those two months to clear my mind has been invaluable. I look back at the day I walked out of that HT exit door and see it as the day I walked into a great new life! I got to experience the culture of Bhutan, played the Samurai Game, kept in touch with the Bytemarks lunch bunch, Manoa Geeks and Flickr Friday meetups, did a bunch of lion dances for Chinese New Year and launched a Monday night tai chi practice, not to mention checking out the Maitreya project, ikebana exhibit and actually borrowing books from the public library. It’s amazing what a little extra time can afford you.

Starting tomorrow I will add one more thing to that list: a new job. I will leave it a mystery for now since I haven’t walked in the door yet and I still have my acceptance papers. I’ll give you a hint, it is a lot more stable than telecom! I do plan to take a picture of the entrance and post it to Flickr. That’ll make for a nice transition, walking out of one door and into another. Life never ceases to amaze me. Stay tuned…
